KEYNOTE SYNOPSIS
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Datuk (Dr.) Ir. Mohd. Annas Bin Hj. Mohd. Nor (PJN, DPMT, JSM PCM, KMN, PJK) graduated in BSc (Electrical Engineering) from Brighton Polytechnic UK in 1972 and obtained his Master’s Degree in Management from Asian Institute of Management, Philippines in 1984. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Technology from University of Brighton, UK. He is currently the Chairman of the Energy Commission, a statutory body established with powers to regulate the energy supply activities and to enforce the energy supply laws in Malaysia. Before being appointed as the Chairman of the Energy Commission, he was the Director General of the Electricity and Gas Supply, Malaysia. He also worked with the National Electricity Board (presently known as Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB)) from 1972 until 1988 where he had been in electricity distribution, rural electrification, power generation, management and engineering audit and human resource development. From 1988 until August 1990, he was the Head of Energy Unit in the Ministry of Energy, Telecommunications and Posts, Malaysia in charge of energy, policies and development, and coordination in electricity supply matters.
Datuk (Dr.) Ir. Mohd. Annas is a professional engineer, a Fellow of Institute of Engineers Malaysia (FIEM) and a member of Malaysian Institute of Management. He is also a member of Standard and Accreditation Council Department of Standard Malaysia, Chairman National Committee International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Chairman Standard Committee Electrotechnical SIRIM, a committee member Trust Account for the Electricity Supply Industry, and sits in the Energy Working Group National Council for Scientific Research and Development. He had sat as a board member of Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), a member of Standard Council of Standards and Industrial Research of Malaysia (SIRIM) and in the Board of Trustee PETRONAS Petroleum Research Fund.
Professor Akhtar Kalam is a Professor of Electrical Engineering in the School of Electrical Engineering at Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia. He received his BSc in Electrical Engineering from Aligarh Muslim University, India in 1973. He obtained his MSc at the University of Oklahoma, USA and Ph.D at the University of Bath, U.K. in 1975 and 1981 respectively. He was the recipient of the Cleo Cross International Scholarship and the University of Bath Scholarship.
He is currently a Professor at School of Electrical Engineering and has been a Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Health, Engineering & Science at Victoria University for 7 years since 1999. He is also a convenor of the Engineers Australia’s Course Accreditation of the engineering undergraduate courses at Victoria University. He has wide experience in educational institutions and industry across four continents. He has conducted research, provided consultancy and has over three hundred eight publications primarily on power system protection and independent power generation and holds one patent. He also has high professional qualifications in Electrical and Electronic Engineering such as CPEng, CEng, FIEAust, FIET and MIEEE. He is also Chair of the Australasian Committee Power Engineering. His research interests include power transmission and distribution networks utilising underground cables, performances of distribution transformers, development of hybrid energy systems, artificial intelligence and its application to power systems, telecommunication in power system protection, algorithms for battery storage plants (BSPs) when connected to a utility grid in power and industrial networks, design and development of protection and control tools to enable the efficient and reliable use of cogeneration and renewable energy plants, fuel cells and its application in cogeneration, fault location techniques to distribution feeders and dynamic studies in power systems.
Professor Dr. Azah Mohamed (born 1955) did her BSc Electronics and Electrical Engineering from King’s College, University of London in 1978 and MSc and PhD from University of Malaya in 1988 and 1995, respectively. She is a full-time faculty member of Electrical, Electronic and Systems Engineering Department of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia from 1985, where she is currently a Professor of Electrical Engineering and the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, UKM. She has published 47 research papers in peer-reviewed international journals, 17 papers in refereed Malaysian journals and presented 101 papers in different international and national conferences/seminars.
Prof. Azah Mohamed is a senior member of IEEE (USA) and student counselor for IEEE UKM student branch. Her current fields of interest are in power system dynamic security assessment, vulnerability assessment, power quality, application of intelligent tools in power quality analysis, fault location and diagnosis, distributed generation and microgrids.
Associate Prof. Dr. Ishak Aris (born 1966) received his BSc in Electrical Engineering from the George Washington University, USA in 1988. He also received his MSc and PhD in Power Electronics Engineering from University of Bradford, United Kingdom in 1991 and 1995, respectively.
Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia and also holds a position of Deputy Director for Institute of Advanced Technology in the same university. He has published 31 research papers in international journals, 8 papers in Malaysian journals and presented 131 papers in different international and national conferences/seminars. He has received numerous awards/medals for his research on power electronics and drive system, robotic, artificial intelligence, SOC and automotive electronics and currently holds five patents. Dr. Ishak Aris is a member of IEEE (USA), SAE, TAU BETA PI, ETA KAPPA NU, Malaysian Invention and Design Society. His areas of interest include power electronics and drive system, robotic, artificial intelligence, SOC and automotive electronics. |
